Enter a Café serial number to decode the manufacture year and month. Below the tool you will find the Café year-code table the decoder uses, worked examples, and an honest note on what the code cannot tell you.

How Café serial numbers encode the date

Café does not print the manufacture date in plain text on most units — it is encoded into the serial number. The decoder recognises one format for this brand:

Shared scheme: Café appliances are built by GE Appliances, and use the same serial-number date format as GE. The codes below are GE’s documented tables — we are reusing them rather than presenting them as separately verified for Café.

Repeating letter date code

The 2nd character of the serial number is the year code. The 1st character is the month.

Applies to serial numbers of at least 2 characters.

Why the year can be ambiguous

Café reuses the same year character across repeating cycles, so one character on its own cannot pin down an absolute year. When that happens the tool picks the most recent year that has already occurred, marks the result medium confidence, and lists the other years the same code could mean.

How to settle it: if you know roughly when the appliance was bought, or the property it came with was built, pick the candidate year closest to that. A unit still in service is far more likely to be from the most recent cycle — but not always, which is exactly why we show you the alternatives instead of hiding them.

Where to find the Café serial number

The serial number is printed on the rating label, usually alongside the model number. Depending on the appliance it may be inside the door frame, under the lid, behind a drawer or on the rear panel. Our label location guide shows where to look for each appliance type.
