Why year codes repeat
Many manufacturers encode the production year as a single letter or digit in the serial number, and that letter or digit repeats on a cycle — commonly every 10, 12, 22 or 30 years depending on the brand and platform. A code decoded today as “the newest year that fits” is a defensible guess, not a certainty: the same character could genuinely mean an appliance built a full cycle earlier. When that’s possible, the result is marked medium confidence and lists the other years the same code could mean, oldest first, so you can use a known purchase date to pick the right one.
