How LG serial numbers encode the date
LG does not print the manufacture date in plain text on most units — it is encoded into the serial number. The decoder recognises one format for this brand:
Last digit of the year, then the month
The 1st character is the last digit of the year, and the 2 digits starting at the 2nd character are the month.
Applies to serial numbers of at least 3 characters.
| Year code | Means |
|---|---|
| 0 | 1990 · 2000 · 2010 · 2020 |
| 1 | 1991 · 2001 · 2011 · 2021 |
| 2 | 1992 · 2002 · 2012 · 2022 |
| 3 | 1993 · 2003 · 2013 · 2023 |
| 4 | 1994 · 2004 · 2014 · 2024 |
| 5 | 1995 · 2005 · 2015 · 2025 |
| 6 | 1996 · 2006 · 2016 · 2026 |
| 7 | 1997 · 2007 · 2017 · 2027 |
| 8 | 1998 · 2008 · 2018 · 2028 |
| 9 | 1999 · 2009 · 2019 · 2029 |
Worked examples
Each example below is decoded by the same engine that powers the tool on this page, so what you see here is exactly what you would get by typing it in.
This tool returns March 2026 · medium confidence
The same code could also mean 1996, 2006, 2016.
Owner confirmed March 2016, not 2026 — the true year is one of the alternates listed above.
A dryer from LG's published worked example. The month is exact. The decade is not written anywhere in an LG serial, so the year shown is the most recent one the code can mean — here the true year is one cycle back.
Why the year can be ambiguous
LG reuses the same year character across repeating cycles, so one character on its own cannot pin down an absolute year. When that happens the tool picks the most recent year that has already occurred, marks the result medium confidence, and lists the other years the same code could mean.
Where to find the LG serial number
The serial number is printed on the rating label, usually alongside the model number. Depending on the appliance it may be inside the door frame, under the lid, behind a drawer or on the rear panel. Our label location guide shows where to look for each appliance type.
